Blackness Castle

Blackness was once an important port north of Edinburgh.  When the Scots asked the English King for permission to build a castle to defend it, it was suggested that they build a ship instead.  The Scots then put themselves to building a castle in the shape of a ship, which perhaps says something about the Scots mentality.  The building looks like a mediaeval warship, and has been variously castle and prison since around the fifteenth century.
