Bernera Barracks were erected in 1722, shortly after the first Jacobite Uprising of 1715, in order to maintain a military presence in the rebellious West Highlands. Glenelg is a remote West Highland village reached by a somewhat tortuous mountain road from the south side of Loch Duich. In cattle droving days it was the custom to "swim" cattle across the narrow stretch of sea which separates Skye from the mainland. Glenelg therefore saw many men and animals pass through on their way to the markets in the Lowlands. |
