Bamburgh Castle stands on the edge of the North Sea at Bamburgh in Northumberland. Although a fortified site from the 6th century, the modern castle only began to take shape in the 11th century at the time of the Norman conquest. The ancient kingdom of Northumberland originally stretched from the Humber to the Firth of Forth, Bamburgh being the capital of this kingdom.
