Wigtown

Wigtown

The small Galloway town of Wigtown has the distinction of being called "Scotland's Book Town" due to the number of secondhand bookshops in the area.  The town became a Royal Burgh in 1457, and is infamous for its associations with the "Wigtown Martyrs", two women Covenanters who were cruelly tied to stakes and drowned by the rising tide.  The area is rich in archaeological artefacts, and nearby Whithorn has strong early Christian associations.
