The Pend archway in this photograph is of 17th century origin, and displays the Royal Arms of Scotland, prior to the Union of the Crowns.  Beyond the archway is situated Whithorn Priory.  It is possible that St. Ninian built his "Candida Casa" or "White House" here, the oldest church in Scotland.  The area abounds in early Christian artefacts.
