Wanlockhead is Scotland's highest village, standing at a height of 1,380 feet above sea level in the Lowther Hills. Gold, lead and silver have been mined here, possibly since Roman times. The road joining Wanlockhead with Leadhills rises to 1,531 feet. During winter months Wanlockhead attracts many skiers. Gold mined locally has been used in the crowns of Scotland's kings. |
