Stranraer lies at the head of Loch Ryan, Galloway, and is Old Wigtownshire's largest town. The rail and steamer terminal link this part of Scotland with Larne, Northern Ireland, some 35 miles to the southwest. Graham of Claverhouse lived here in 1682 whilst pursuing his persecutions of Covenanters. The Arctic explorer, Sir John Ross, made his home here.
