Rockliffe lies on the Rough Firth, an estuary of the Urr Water, Dumfries and Galloway.  The many little inlets on this part of the Solway coast were used by tobacco and wine smugglers in the 18th century.  Legends abound along this coast of the smugglers' exploits.
