Peebles

The Royal Burgh of Peebles stands on a particularly picturesque stretch of the River Tweed.  Like most Border towns, its economy is based upon tweed and knitwear production.  Many famous "names" have lived here, including Robert Louis Stevenson, the novellist, Mungo Park, the African explorer and missionary, John Buchan, the novelist, Samuel Crockett, the novellist, and William and Robert Chambers, of Chambers' Encyclopaedia fame.  Neidpath Castle, a particularly impressive Borders Keep, stands nearby, dominating the River Tweed's passage through a deep ravine.
