New Galloway has the distinction of being the smallest Royal Burgh in Scotland. The town is an angling centre lying on the River Ken and to the north of Loch Ken in the Glen Kens district of Galloway. To the south of the village lie the ruins of Kenmure Castle, visited variously by Sir Walter Scott, Robert Burns and Mary, Queen of Scots. The castle was firstly burned after Mary, Queen of Scots' visit, and again by Oliver Cromwell. |
