New Abbey is one of the prettiest and most interesting villages in Dumfries and Galloway.  Sweetheart Abbey, seen in this photograph, was built  by Devorgilla, mother of John Balliol, Scotland's Vassal King, in 1273.  Devorgilla and the casket containing the heart of her husband, also John Balliol, are said to be buried in this Abbey.
