The road from Wanlockhead, at 1380 feet above sea level, Scotland's highest village, passes through the Mennock Pass in the Lowther Hills to the Nithsdale village of Mennock. Gold, lead and silver have been mined nearby since Roman times, and it is believed that gold from this area was used in the crowns of Scottish kings. |
