John Paul Jones was born in Kirkbean in 1747, the son of a gardener. He apprenticed as a sailor and made several voyages to America. In 1773 he inherited property in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It was around this time that he added the name "Jones" to his original name of John Paul. In 1775 he was commissioned as a Senior Lieutenant and sailed into the Solway Firth in 1778. In 1779, as Commodore of a French squadron, but displaying American colours, he attempted to raid Leith, and later defeated the British frigate "Serapis" off Flamborough Head. He later became Rear Admiral of the Black Sea fleet at the time of the Russo-Turkish war. He died in Paris and his remains were taken to the U.S.A. in 1905. |
