Isle of Whithorn has strong associations with St. Ninian, the son of a local chieftain, who landed here in 395 AD after returning from Rome. The ruins of a local chapel date from the 13th century, but there are signs of an earlier church. St. Ninian's cave lies four miles west of the village, and was used by the Saint as a retreat. The area affords excellent views of the English Lake District, the Northern Ireland coast, and of the Isle of Man which is seen in the distance in this photograph. |
