This March Cairn was erected in 1911 by the Hawick Callants Club to commemorate both the granting of a charter to the town of Hawick in 1537 and the subsequent division of the Common in 1777, when the Burgess roll was called at the annual Riding of the Marches. The ground was gifted to Hawick by the Duke of Buccleuch in 1937. In the background the "Reivers' Road" can be seen. This road was used by both Scots and English cross-Border raiders for many years. |
