This photograph of Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway, looks across the valley of the Urr Water.  Dalbeattie gained great prosperity due to the abundance of its local stone, shiny and grey in appearance, which was exported all over the world.  A little north is the famous Motte of Urr, a well-preserved Saxon or early Norman circular mound within a fortified enclosure - one of the finest in Britain.
