King Robert the Bruce was once active in this area, and the Bruce Stone, near Clatteringshaws Loch, commemorates this.  The waters of the Black Water of Dee were used to create this loch, part of the Galloway power scheme.  The area is part of the Cairn Edward Forest, a part of the Glen Trool Forest Park.
