This photograph of a piper welcoming visitors to Scotland was taken on the Scottish-English border at Carter Bar, 1371 feet above sea level in the Cheviot Hills. It is a good vantage point for comparing the landscape of the two countries. To the north the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, and to the south the mostly forested hills of Northumberland. It was about half a mile north of here that the Scots Jeddarts beat the English Redesdale men in the last great border battle of 1575. To the east was situated the Roman camp and earthworks of Chew Green and the earliest Roman road into Scotland. |
